Review: River Cable's Flexigy Speaker Cables
River Cable has been around 20 years making cables for the professional a/v industry and has recently created their consumer division for home theater cables. The benefit here is that River Cable is able to trickle down technologies and connection qualities from their 20 years of experience down to the ardent home theater enthusiast looking to get the best performance from their gear by using high quality cables.

Comparing Cable
There are so many brands of cables out there that, as a consumer, it's hard to find out which brands are the best or even where to start. The best place to start any cable comparison is to compare any cable to similar Monster Cable; the brand that brought consumer based high-quality home theater cables to the mass market.

Monster Cable is the safe bet among home theater enthusiasts as Monster's success in the industry proves their worth. That's not to say there are not better products out there, but rather what should be compared is the price versus performance gains over Monster Cable that's offered.

The Real Price Per Foot
Monster Cable's $1.50 per foot speaker cable is a stalwart of home theater speaker connections. Monster Cable's $1.50 per foot speaker cable is relatively cheap ($15-$30 per speaker) while offering huge sound improvement returns. However, at that price the cables do not come with soldered oxygen-free terminated connection plugs, thus requiring yearly cable stripping to keep the connections clean and your speakers sounding at their best.

After $2 per foot, it becomes harder to justify spending more on speaker cable as the price versus performance factor greatly diminishes above the $2 price point. Hence any cable costing more had better offer well designed ergonomics, connection terminations, and don't forget the most important part... better sound quality. River Cable's Flexygy Speaker Cables definitely deliver great sound and good ergonomics, but the standout feature that separates River Cable's Flexygy lineup is perhaps the best banana connections ever made.

Big Blue
Out of the box the Flexygy's first impression is that they are really blue and relatively flat. The cables are sheathed in a solid deep blue plastic surround wherein only the ends of the cable reveal the 2 cables contained within.

Next to black, the deep blue color is an awesome ergonomic cable color compared to the glowing clear-sheathed copper of Monster Cable's speaker cables. The glowing copper of Monster Cable's design can prove very difficult to hide as the glowing copper easily draws attention to itself even in low-lit environments.

Ergonomics
The Flexygy cable is simply easy to move around with relatively few tangling issues even in larger runs. Twisting and binding simply aren't issues. The bulkiness of these cables gives them an indestructible feel and the rock solid connectors feel just as indestructible.

The end connection cables are colored in black and blue. While different enough in color to differentiate in well-lit environments, the dimly lit areas behind most components can make it difficult to see the color difference, thus hindering the connection process. You'll most likely end up double or triple checking your connections to ensure proper polarity of your speaker connections.

While cable color is a small issue, it would certainly be better if the cables where color- coded black and red, or if the blue cable had a one-inch red band on it to make it easier to see.

Killer Connection
The absolute best thing River Cable's Flexygy speaker cables offer are the Banana plug connections. Cable connections are supposed to be tight to ensure good metal-to-metal contact of the connections. Some banana plugs come with really tight connections that can make connecting them into your amp or speaker terminals difficult. Overly tight connections can make it seem dangerous to remove the cable, as they won't let go without significant force.

Worse than overly tight connections are loose connections where metal-to-metal contact isn't maximized. Worse yet, with loose connections it can be easy to snag loose cables and actually have them fall out of the plug. The only upside to a loose connector is that they're easy to disconnect and reconnect.

River Cable fixes all loose and tight connection issues by offering banana plugs with expandable connection pins. Simply plug in the relatively loose banana plug, screw the body of the connector forward, and the pin expands to create a custom super-tight fit.

To remove, simply unscrew the body of the connector to collapse the pin back down to the loose stage, and out comes the banana plug with minimal effort. Finally, a cable connection that's easy to connect and disconnect while offering the tightest "death-grip" connection possible.

More Expensive
Compared to Monster's venerable $1.50 speaker cable the Flexygy's sound improvement is relatively minimal in blind listening sessions. There is a slightly greater a sense of air with the Flexygy cable, but listening sessions didn't produce night and day differences.

What River Cable's Flexygy speaker cables do offer is maintenance free, rock-solid speaker cables backed by a lifetime warranty. You'll never have to strip cable leads again, and you will always know that your speakers are solidly connected.

The Real Price
While River Cable's Flexygy speaker cables come in at $214.99 per 3-meter pair, the oxygen-free, soldered, death-grip connectors are easily worth about $40 per cable. When you take connector price into account, the cost of the Flexygy cables end up costing around $70 for each cable.

Stepping up to greater distances doesn't cost much more as you're actually paying more for the custom length creation and connectors. Adding another meter or two only costs around $10-$20 extra, so be sure to get cables that allow you a little room to grow.

Since most consumers are unlikely to have their main speakers setup at greater distances than 10-15 feet away from the receiver/processor, it's unlikely that many people will need any cables in greater length than 3-meters.

What you need to ask yourself is if the lifetime warranty, best banana plugs ever made, and better ergonomics are worth the extra money to have maintenance free speaker cables for life.

Summary
River Cable's Flexygy speaker cables make connections that you can simply connect and forget. With the absolutely best banana plug connector ever made, and a sealed connection, you don't ever need to worry about oxidation on the speaker cable. River Cable's Flexygy speaker cables are definitely worth a look for those in the market for high quality cables with great ergonomics.
